From the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922 (see History of the Republic of Ireland), a diploma of proficiency in Irish was necessary of all individuals recently appointed to the Civil Service of the Republic of Ireland, like postal employees, tax collectors, agricultural inspectors, Garda Síochána (law enforcement), and many others.
