Exit polls uncovered only 42% of those Catholics and fewer than a 3rd of Protestant evangelicals understood Santorum was Catholic. Santorum's emphasis on his "Christian roots" was especially favored by evangelicals in the Midwest and Southern states for the duration of the 2012 primaries, despite the fact that he shed the Republican Catholic vote in most states to Romney.
